Joseph was killed when he fell from the county bridge being erected over the Allegheny river at Scrubgrass while he was working on it. Materials were being hoisted to the top of the false work and Joseph went up with them. He was warned not to because it was considered dangerous. When the load neared the top he lost his grip and began to fall. He had dropped several feet when Reno Kribbs, son of the superintendent of construction grabbed him and held on to him for an instant. Joseph's weight was too great for him to sustain. Before he released him he tried to throw him clear of the projections below, but he did not succeed and Joseph hit one with terrific force. His limp body tumbled into the water and he did not come to the surface. After searching for more than two hours the men on the job found his body exactly where it went in. Both legs were broken he was crushed over the heart and his head was cut
