He was born in Montgomery, AL to the late Arthur John and Lula Mae Davis Maddox.
Mr. Maddox is survived by his wife of 54 years, Judy Maddox, Griffin, GA; Daughter, Christy (Bill) Ward, Griffin, GA; grandson, William (Bailey) Ward, Smyrna, GA; granddaughter, Meg Ward, Atlanta, GA; great granddaughter, Maddox Klare Ward, Smyrna, GA; sister-in-law, Kay Maddox, Monticello, GA; several cousins, nephews and nieces; and his loyal companion, Ripley.
Bobby's work career started early. As a young boy, he was constantly doing odd jobs or helping his father at Harold's Barbeque in Atlanta. He later felt the calling to serve his country and joined the Air Force, at the ripe old age of 15. When he was to be deployed to Korea, his mother told them his age, and he was given an honorable discharge. Later, when he became of age, he joined the US Army and served several years. Afterwards, he went to work at Southern Bell and lasted through the company transition to Bell South and AT&T. He retired with over 50 years' service.
His family and friends will always remember him for his smile and easygoing personality. He never met a stranger and always enjoyed talking to people he didn't know. Humor was one of his strong traits and he knew every old joke in the book. He was also a talented woodworker and had a knack for fixing things. In his retirement, he put his artistic skills to work by making personalized walking sticks for family members and friends. The lucky recipients have a lasting piece of art to remember him by. One of his hobbies was riding motorcycles. He was a member of the Fuzzy Bunnies Motorcycle Club of East Atlanta and was still riding at 86 years of age. In addition, he was a talented musician playing mandolin and guitar at many local clubs with several bands as a younger man.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Griffin Area Resource Center, an organization that supports people with developmental disabilities, at 931 Hamilton Blvd., Griffin, GA 30224.
