Mabel Irene Adell was the daughter of John W. Adell and Tilda Carlson. She attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Rock Island Co., Illinois where she studied music before returning to Paxton, Ford Co., Illinois to become the Organist at First Lutheran Church for several years. Mabel married Ellsworth Robert Cowan in 1924 and removed to Chicago where she became a Telephone Operator. Ellsworth died only 11 years later. The couple had no children, and Mabel did not remarry. Mabel lived 45 years years after her husband's death during which time she continued her career as a Telephone Operator and became a Telephone Superviser by 1950.
