John Mathews, an Englishman who settled in the area before 1839, started a business about eight miles southeast of Rock Port, Missouri on this stagecoach road. He was born in 1799, and he and his wife lived in English Grove vicinity until their deaths on the same day, August 22, 1848. They were interred together in a single grave on their farm. English Grove cemetery was built starting with these two burials and a third burial of a child who died while the family was camping among the grove of trees. Stones once marking their graves have long since diappeared.......
