Born 12 September 1943, in Little Rock, Arkansas to Robert Milo "Mike" Curtis and Clara Bell Shumate. His birth name was Jesse Ross combining the names of both male grandparents, Alvin Ross Shumate and Albert Jesse Curtis. He is their only child.

He married Linda Rose Outlaw on 15 Aug 1964 in Sallisaw, Oklahoma.

Together they had five children Tony Randall Curtis (1965), Kimberly Michelle Curtis (1967), Brian Lyndall Curtis (1969), Marcus Wade Curtis (1970) & Gwendolyn Rochelle Curtis(1971).

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

J. R. Curtis was a retired Produce Manager and former Arkansas Department of Forestry Commission employee and an avid Razorback and Dodgers Fan.

He loved the automobile brand of Starfire.

He was known for the phrase "listen to the words" when a favorite song from his youth would come on the radio airwaves.
