Jacob was a direct descendant of John and Betty More's John line. He was the youngest of twelve children born to John Taylor More and Eleanor Laraway More. Jacob was raised Moresville, New York; a place now known as Grand Gorge, where his father was the proprietor of a popular hotel and the operator of a large farm. Jacob attended the nearby district school and later the Greenville Academy. He married first to Elizabeth Wickes on 19 February 1836. She died 19 March 1848 and Jacob married next to her sister, Jane Ann Wickes, on 10 September 1848.
From a Camden newspaper obituary printed in History of the More Family:
Among Mr. More's first business ventures was running a grist mill at Harpersfield, Delaware County, which he gave up on account of ill health. He later went into the tanning business, which he learned from being with his brothers, and in 1852 went to Pennsylvania and had charge of a tannery belonging to the H. D. Gould estate. He afterwards conducted tanneries at Lackawack, Ulster county, and from 1857 to 1864 was in Amboy, Oswego county. In 1864 he bought a tannery located near Conant's factory in Camden, at which point he was burned out. He soon after moved to Sand Bank, Oswego county, and took charge of a tanney. While in Sand Bank he was supervisor of the town two years, and he was nominated for member of assembly in that district. Being a staunch democrat, and the district republican, he was not elected. He moved back to Camden about twenty-one years ago, and has since been agent for fire and life insurance.
Jacob and his first wife, Elizabeth, were the parents of four children; Zophar Wickes More, John Taylor More, Emily Nelson More, and Egbert More. Jacob and his second wife, Jane, were the parents of three children; Frank More who died just two weeks after birth, Elizabeth More, and Annie More.
