Allen F. "Alby" Hickman, Sr., passed away Tuesday, Mar. 14, 2017, at home surrounded by his family.
Alby was born at home in Harrington, the son of the late Jacob and Pearl Hickman. He was a graduate of Harrington High School class of 1954. After high school, Alby joined the U.S. Army serving our country from 1957 to 1959.
After the service, Alby went to work at the Pennsylvania Railroad for five years. He then went to work for the DuPont Company in Seaford as a mechanic, working for 31 years before retiring in 1996. Alby was a member of the American Legion C.K.R.T. Post #7 - Harrington, a member of the Harrington Moose Lodge #534, a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Harrington, and the Harrington High School Alumni Association. He enjoyed being a Little League Coach for the Harrington Little League for eight years, he was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan, he loved planting a garden every year of strawberries and vegetables up until he was unable due to his illness, liked to duck and goose hunt with his sons, and loved to cook. What brought pride and pleasure to Alby was his woodworking ability. He loved doing carpentry work, was very good at fixing things and actually was known as a jack of all trades. As a matter of fact, Alby even possessed a valid Barber's License working for the late Bill Johnson, of Harrington.
In addition to his parents, Alby was preceded in death by three stepbrothers, Martin Eugene Willey, Roland Willey and Morris "Bob" Willey; and a stepsister, Louise Aiken.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sue Hickman; two sons, Allen F. Hickman, Jr. and his wife, Rhonda and Don J. Hickman and his wife, Emily; seven grandchildren, Ashly, Wendy Luna, Erica, Allen III, Ben, Jacob, Zachary; and a stepgrandson, Kael Kerlick; one great-grandson, Daniel Luna; and one sister, Joyce Porter.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., on Sunday, Mar. 19, 2017, at the McKnatt, Carpenter & Baker Funeral Home, 50 Commerce St., Harrington, where a viewing will be held from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Burial will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Milford - Harrington Hwy., Harrington.
