Levi was the son of Irishman John McDermott and Martha Newell and the elder brother of Francis and Mary Alice McDermott. His mother died after the birth of Mary Alice and the family was split up. Mary Alice was taken by another family who immigrated to Oregon. Francis was taken in by the John Harold family and Levi stayed with his father.
On Nov. 16, 1873 in Kosciusko County,Indiana he married Mary Ann Secore, against her parents's wishes. Together they had: Martha Elizabeth, Myrtle Alma, Jasper Secor, Emma Rachel,Theodosa Alta, Dorothy, Frances Louella,Mary Ethel, Irene Maude, Nora Delight, Lee and Jennie McDermott.
Levi's brother Francis was living with Levi and family in Kosciusko County in 1880. That same year Francis married Rosa Kemp. Later the family moved to Ottawa, Illinois; Levi first appeared in the Ottawa City Directory about 1900 and then died a year later.
