Sam was the son of John Raines and Vernettie Bilbrey Raines York. He married Mary Josephine Carder on Dec. 26, 1922 in Russellville, Logan, Kentucky. Her parents were William Lewis Carder and Ethel Gregory. Her step-mother was Lula Mae Raines, Sam's sister. (Lula married Mary's father William Carder on Oct. 25, 1922)
