Melvin J. Barr was born on September 27, 1892, in Marcus, Iowa, the 6th and youngest child of Gabriel M. and Margaret Rebecca Ward Barr. Dr. Fry attended the birth.

Other Siblings:
Sister: Pearl Wanda (Pearlie) Barr, b. June 4, 1886, in Marcus.
She died in childhood in Marcus of scarlet fever.
Brother: Leslie Garfield Barr, b. September 3, 188_ in Marcus.
He died in childhood in Marcus of spinal meningitis.
Both are presumably buried in Marcus, but there are no grave markers, and the cemetery has no record of their burials.

When Melvin was growing up, the family belonged to the First Methodist Church in Marcus.

Melvin served in World War I as a Sergeant in the Quartermaster Corps, the branch of the United States Army that supplies food, water, fuel, clothing, and equipment to soldiers.

He married Estella Grace Greig (his sister Anna Maude's co-teacher and best friend) on August 9, 1918, in Storm Lake, Buena Vista County, Iowa.

The 1920 census shows Melvin and Estella residing in Newport News, Virginia. By the 1930 census, they had moved to Richmond, Virginia, where they remained for several decades. Their longtime residence was 5921-A Brookfield Road, Richmond, Virginia.

Melvin and Estella had two children:
Robert "Bobby" Barr, who lived in Winter Haven, Florida, as an adult.
Janet Claire Barr Mohney

Melvin was employed as a Supervisor of Joint Facilities (railway terminals or properties that also service smaller carriers) for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad.

He passed away at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital, 1200 E. Broad St., Richmond, of a "cerebral vascular accident," (a stroke). The Joseph W. Bliley Funeral Home in Richmond was in change of arrangements.
