Ellen Nancy Berkebile, 92, formerly of South Jones Street, Lock Haven, and also a former resident, along with her husband, of Curwensville from 1967 to 1983, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2008 at Lock Haven Hospital.

She was born in Liberty Township on Feb. 26, 1916, a daughter of the late Irvin and Olive Smith Schenck.

On April 29, 1939 in Avis, she married Lamar Berkebile, who preceded her in death in November 1982.

Ellen was a former rural mail carrier on the Beech Creek-Orviston route.

She was a member of Faith Chapel United Methodist Church in Hunter Run. She was also a member of the National Grange, Howard Grange, and the Howard Historical Society.

She was her family's historian, devoting many years to researching, reading and studying about her family. She was an avid reader.

Ellen is survived by a daughter, Barbara, and husband Thomas Elling of Lock Haven; a son, Harold Berkebile of California; eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and Jay Berkebile; two brothers, Arthur and Richard Schenck; and a grandson, David Berkebile.

Funeral services will be Sunday, March 9, 2008 at 2 p.m. at Faith Chapel United Methodist Church, with Pastor Terry Daugherty and Pastor Bob Mauer officiating. Burial will be in Schencks Cemetery, Howard Township. Visitation will be Saturday, March 8, 2008 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kader-Neff Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 135 W. Main St., Howard.
