Came To Minnesota In Covered Wagon

Mrs. Lucy Sherman, Who Died Here At Age of 77, Was one of State's Pioneers

Funeral services for Mrs. Lucy Sherman, who died early last Thursday morning at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Wilson of this city from the infirmities of old age, were held Saturday afternoon at the Erickson Funeral Home in this city, Rev. D.L. Seager officiating. The remains were placed in the vault and later burial will be made at Greenwood cemetery beside the husband who preceded her in death.

Lucy Caroline Hasbrouck was born March 13, 1856 in a settlement in the state of Wisconsin, moving when a girl with her parents, to Minnesota, making the trip in a covered wagon and settling in Douglas county at Carlos. There she grew to womanhood and was married to Albert Prettyman. To this union was born eight children who are: Fred Prettymans of Lake Emma township, Albert of Nevis township, Ed of Sanway Wash., Walter of St. CLoud and Mrs. Arch Chapman of Oswego, Ore. and Richard, Joe, Morris and Luthera; who with their father died many years ago.

The year 1890 Mrs. Prettyman was married to Samuel E. Sherman of St. Cloud, the marriage being performed at St. Cloud by Mr. Sherman's father, Rev. Frederick Sherman who for many years was a Methodist pastor at St. Cloud. Mr. Sherman was a brother to the late Mrs. E.G. Holmes of Detroit Lakes.

Following their marriage the Shermans lived for fourteen years at St. Cloud, coming to Park Rapids in 1910. The year 1916 Mr. Sherman was killed in the woods by a falling tree. Since then Mrs. Sherman had lived here and the past five years had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Wilson.

She was brought up in the Adventist faith, being a faithful follower. She was a kindly, quiet, unassuming lady making friends of all who came within the circle of her acquaintance. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed in the home. Mrs. Sherman suffered a ruptured appendix about a year ago from which complications arose from which she never fully recovered.

Surviving are Mrs. Wilson and brother Frederick D. Sherman of Everett, Washington, and the Prettyman children, whose names and addresses appear above. Surviving are also two sisters, each of whom are past eighty years of age. They are Mrs. F. Oliver of Sauk Centre and Mrs. Myra Pennar of Alexandria and several grandchildren. Mrs. Sherman's only remaining brother, Chan Hasbrouck, died only a year ago at Cass Lake.

Relatives from out of town in attendance at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. E. Prettyman of Dorset, Mr. and Mrs. R. Prettyman and Mrs. A. Prettyman of Nevis township, Mrs. Baird and son, also a friend of Staples, Mr. and Mrs. Chan Hasbrouck, Jr. and Mrs. Chan Hasbrouck, Sr. son Donald and daughter Eva of Cass Lake.
