Raymond Wayne Phillips passed away peacefully just 3 weeks and 2 days from his 93 birthday with his family by his side on Thursday, September 2, 2021.
Wayne did not fear his death because he knew he was going to walk side by side with his Angel up to Heaven.

Wayne was born in Batesville and grew up in very tough times and while his family was poor, he always knew that he was rich because he learned to always put family first! This helped him live a long, fulfilling life. Here are some of the accomplishments he was most proud of:

• Wayne served as a school principal for grades K-8th for two years starting at the age of 19. • He sent money to his mother for years helping her through some tough times. He showed through his actions that putting his family first was not an empty sentiment. • Wayne was a great salesman for Graybar Electric for 39 years. His skill allowed him to become a manager. However, Wayne's friendly and outgoing nature meant that he never met a stranger and his passion for talking to and educating people led him back into outside sales. • Wayne served on the Governor's Console for Aging and was still active before his death. He was always trying to make things better for the seniors of Arkansas. • Wayne was a member of the Silver Haired Legislators. He acted as a champion for the many seniors throughout the State of Arkansas who are food deprived. Wayne was well known by name throughout the State in the food banks for securing the release of $2,000,000 from state funds to go for food.

Just a few more tidbits about Wayne's personality. He was never heard to swear. He felt that there were better ways to express his feeling. Wayne taught his children not to lie. Wayne explained it like this. "I am not smart enough to lie, because once you start then you have to remember what lie you told to who and at some point, you will forget what you said and get caught". Wayne believed and practiced that if you gave your word, you didn't need a contract and not to go back on your word because in the end that is all you really own.

Wayne was preceded in death by his first wife of 64 years, Gloria Phillips; and his eldest son, Tommy R Phillips.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Joan Cantor Phillips of Van Buren; a son, David W. Phillips of Mansfield, TX; two sisters, Clara Erikkla of Tampa, FL, and Priscilla Lunsford of Chesterfield, MO; and two grandsons, Harvey W. Phillips of Rogers, and Wyatt F. Phillips of Boston, MA.

Cremation is under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home in Van Buren. No memorial is planned for Wayne at this time. He will be remembered through his good works, the family he raised, and the people his life impacted along the way. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Meals on Wheels. Wayne supported their efforts to keep Senior Citizens well fed and he would be very pleased.
