car-train crash- A car driven by Frank Fellows on Manton hit a Pennsylvania Railroad Engine about 7:35 pm tuesday on the M-42 crossing at Manton, Fellows was reported to be in poor condition today in Mercy Hospital.
Manton- A rural Manton man was seriously injured about 7:35 tuesday when his car slammed into the engine of a Pennsylvania Railroad train on the M-42 crossing in Manton. Frank Fellows 73, of RR1 Manton, was reported to be in poor condition today at Mercy Hospital at Cadillac.
Fellows suffered head and internal injuries and multiple fractures, his doctor said today.
Engineer of the southbound train was Carl Cuttingham, 40, of Grand Rapids. Simon Peters of Cadillac was conductor. Officials od the Wexfors County Sheriff's Department said there were three witnesses of the crach, including Peters, plus the engineer.
Undersheriff Robert Hill said Cuttingham told him he could see Fellows car arrpoaching westward on the highway at a slow rate of speed and was " sure" the car would stop.
However, Hill added, the car continued into the left front of the engine and was flipped about 33 feet to the south side of the street where it rolled onto its side, pinning Fellows underneath.
A witness told Hill he had seen the crash and saw the car flip at a 90 degree angle before landing. The witness said he could hear the bell ringing for the crossing . This attracted his attention, he added, When officers arrived at the scene, flasher signals were also operating.
After the impact at about the center of the street, according to the deputies' report, and as the car flipped to the south curbing, Fellows was tossed about and partially through the right door window, to be pinned under the vehicle when it rolled onto its side. the train stopped about 500 feet south of the point on impact, Hill reported. He said there were two engines, a caboose and seven railcars, south of the intersection and onr railcar blocking the intersection when the train came to a stop. Probably as many cars were north of the intersection. Hill added, although he had not counted them.

Forty-nine hours after his car hit a railroad engine at Manton Tuesday night, Frank Abner Fellows, 73 of rural Manton died Thursday night at Mercy Hospital. Fellows' automobile hit a Pennsylvania Railroad engine about 7:30 pm Tuesday on the 42 crossing in Manton.
He died about 8:30 pm thursday as a result of injuries sustained in the crach. His car had been tossed about 33 feet from the point of impact and flipped onto its side. pinning Fellows underneath. He had fallen partially thru the window.
He was born July 11, 1895 in Newago County. Hw came to Wexford County as a small boy and spent most of his life here. He ahd been employed as a carpenter and woodworker. He has been a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. He married Lila Longstreet on April 10, 1914. She died in 1961.
Surviving are two sond. Loren of Manton and James of Holland.11 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren
Three sisters preceeded him in death.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm Sunday in the Bostick Funeral Chapel with Rev H.Zuiverink officiating. Burial will be in Soper Cemetery.
