WALTER TOWNE DIES SUDDENLY IN BAY CITY
Walter Towne, former Petaluma businessman, died Monday night at St. Luke's hospital, San Francisco, following a stroke of paralysis which he suffered earlier in the day.
The suddenness of the death of Mr. Towne, shocked and saddened his family and friends. His condition was not considered serious when first taken ill, but grew more critical during the evening. The end came at 7 o'clock. His daughter, Mrs. Frank Maus, of this city, was summoned, but her father passed away before she reached the hospital.
Born in Petaluma, March 22, 1868, Mr. Towne was aged 64 years, 3 months and 26 days. A member of an old Petaluma family, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Smith D. Towne. His father was one-of the pioneer druggist of Petaluma and conducted a drug store on Main street, in the building now occupied by A. W. Agnew's shoe store. The family, socially prominent, was widely known.
The late Mr. Towne conducted the Towne drug store for number of years, but finally disposed of the business, and opened and ice cream and candy parlor. Of recent years he had retired, making his home in an apartment, which he owned at 420 Rivera street, San Francisco.
Mr. Towne received his education in the Petaluma schools and was graduated from the old high school on D street. He was a leader In the social clubs of other days and was prominent.
His marriage to the former Miss Josephine Cadwell, whose father was the owner of Pell Orchard, at Cadwell station, north of Petaluma, was a social event of much importance. The couple always made their home in this city. Mrs. Towne died several years ago.
Surviving Mr. Towne are his two daughters, Mrs Robert Johnston, San Francisco. and Mrs. Frank Maus, of Petaluma, and his grandchildren. He was a brother of the late Lester and Beverly Towne. His sister, Clarice; died some time ago. After the death of his wife, Mr. Towne disposed of the Pell Orchard property and removed to Petaluma, residing for several years in the Haskell home on Fifth street. For the past ten years he has been making his home in San Francisco. He frequently visited here with his daughter, Mrs. Maus, and always enjoyed meeting old friends.
Mr. Towne's Petaluma friends learned with regret of his untimely death.
The body has been removed to the chapel of John C. Mount. The funeral will probably take place Wednesday and the interment will be in the family plot In Cypress Hill cemetery.
