Apr 18, 2023

Diane J. (Sherriff) Miller passed away at home in Anchorage on April 18, 2023.

Born in San Francisco, her early years were spent primarily in South Pasadena, Calif., but 1953 found Diane's family moving to Anchorage. A 1956 graduate of Anchorage High School, in 1962 she earned a degree in accounting from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. While there she studied hard enough to win a scholarship, played hard enough to be put on university probation for being caught in a bar underage, and worked hard enough to be the second-best female collegiate rifle shooter in the nation.

After college Diane returned to Anchorage where she worked as a bookkeeper until Floyd Miller talked her into driving his newcar back to Northway so he could fly his plane. Once there, he talked her into staying and cleaning up his bookkeeping mess. A few weeks later they were married. The next decade Diane spent working her tail off with Floyd as they ran a flight service, grocery store, liquor store, lodge, gas station, power company, etc. Diane also did the bookkeeping, was a U.S. Customs agent, had a couple of babies, made hundreds of pies, and drank large quantities of Diet Pepsi. Widowed in 1981, she remained in Alaska until 1988, when she married Robert Hanson of North Dakota. After seven years there on a working cattle ranch, during which time she became a prolific, excellent quilter, Diane returned to Alaska and bookkeeping. In 2009, she retired, moving to Colorado Springs, Colo., and later, Port Angeles, Wash., before returning once again to Anchorage in 2019. Her retirement was spent quilting and loving on her grandbabies.

Like nearly everyone who has died recently and had a written obituary, Diane enjoyed her friends and family tremendously and had an excellent sense of humor. It's true. Even as dementia stole bits and pieces of her, she continued to be exceptionally witty. She was funny and tough and generous. She loved lattes and jeans and lunch with friends, and she left behind a mountain of fabric.

Diane was preceded in death by her mother, Jeannine Sherriff; stepfather, Lee Sherriff; father, John Roy; and granddaughter, Olivia Miller. She is survived by her children, Dianne Haddox (Chris) and Jeffrey Miller; daughter-in-love, Amy McCloskey Miller; grandchildren, Rylee, Gabriel, Sadie and Maggie; and sister, Jacqueline Musgrave (Robert).
