Pioneer in Good Spirits on Her Ninety-first Birthday
Sitting enthroned among children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, Martha Clarissa Middleton, widow of Charles F. Middleton, celebrated Wednesday her ninety-first birthday.
The home in which she is now living at 421 Twenty-sixth street, is built on the lot which was taken up by her husband when he first came to Utah with the pioneers. "Grandma Middleton," as she is affectionately referred to by many who are not related to her, enjoyed her birthday. With a mind that the years have not dulled; with an interest in affairs; with a glow of pride in her family. She received visitors, calling them all by name, and had a "right good time."
Mrs. Middleton was born on October 24, 1837, in Adams county, Illinois, the daughter of Jonathan Browning, who was also the father of Utah's famous inventor, John Mose Browning. Mrs. Middleton lived with her father in Nauvoo, Ill., at the time of the martyrdom of the prophet, Joseph Smith, she distinctly remembers the prophet and relates having seen him ride out of Nauvoo going to Carthage, and to his death.
With her father, Mrs. Middleton came to Utah in the year 1852. The family located in Ogden, where the father opened a machine and gun shop. This shop became the cradle of the inventive genius of the famous John Mose Browning.
In October of 1854, Mrs. Middleton was married to Charles F. Middleton, who at the time of his death, 13 years ago, was a member of the presidency of the Weber stake of the Mormon Church. Mr. Middleton was ever proud of the fact that he was baptized into the church by the prophet, Joseph Smith.
"Grandma Middleton" is the mother of eleven children, thirty-five grandchildren, sixty three great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren."
