"Uncle" Henry Ward, 93, one of East Texas' oldest citizens and well known and beloved by all the older citizens of the county, passed away at his home in the Springfield community Friday night at 8:10 following a two weeks illness with pneumonia.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at Springfield Methodist church, with burial following at Beck's Chapel cemetery, which the deceased laid off as a cemetery forty years ago. His wife was the first person buried there. Services were conducted by Rev. Leslie LeGrand, pastor at Springfield, assisted by Dr. W.G. Fletcher of Athens.
"Uncle" Henry had been in the best of health up until he became ill recently. In December he attended a dinner given by his daughter, Mrs. Ira Welch, at Cross Roads, on the occasion of his 93rd birthday and was in fine spirits.
Born in Arkansas, he came to Texas early in life and was among the first persons to settle in the Beck's Chapel community of this county. He lived there until 33 years ago, when he moved to the Springfield community in Anderson county, where he resided until his death.
Deceased was twice married, the first time to Miss Nancy Jane Sherwood. To this union were born eight children, two of whom preceded him in death. The surviving children of this union are: Mrs. Ira Welch, Beck's Chapel; Ed Ward, Brownfield; Jack Ward, Beck's Chapel; Mrs. Dora Lewis, Post Oak; Arthur Ward of Cross Roads and Leonard Ward of Malakoff.
To his second wife, who preceded him in death in 1925, were born four children, all of whom survive. They are: Mrs. Myrtle Thompson, Springfield; John Henry Ward of Tyler; Mrs. Arlene Bristow, Springfield and Earl Lee Ward, Springfield.
Mr. Ward was a member of the Methodist church the greater part of his life and for many years served as a steward in the church.
