Former Muncie resident Joyce Middleton, 94, passed away peacefully and surrounded by her family on Sunday, December 4, 2022. She was a resident at Garden Villas Assisted Living in Town & Country, MO. Joyce and her husband Dr. William H. Middleton lived in Muncie from 1957 to 2001. She then lived in Cincinnati, Indianapolis, and St. Louis, allowing her to be close to her children. Joyce was born in Milan, TN, where she grew up with her parents and four sisters. When in the eighth grade, she represented Tennessee in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. She was valedictorian at Milan High School.

Joyce attended Murray State University and completed her education degree in three years, graduating summa cum laude in 1949. While at Murray, she was a member of Tri Sigma educational sorority and was voted a "campus favorite" all three years. Bill Middleton was the co-captain of the Murray football team. She married William H. Middleton, June 2, 1951, in Milan, Gibson County, Tennessee. Her 31-year teaching career began in Arthur and then Flora, IL. before she moved to Muncie, IN and was an English teacher for 27 years at Storer Junior High, Storer Middle School, and Northside Middle School. She earned an M.A. in Education from Ball State in 1962. Joyce served as Chair of the English Department at Storer MIddle School for many years. She retired in 1989 after educating hundreds of students in Dickens and Dickinson, Faulkner and Frost, and correcting thousands of sentences that ended in a preposition.

Joyce was one of the first female trustees of Hazelwood Christian Church and served three terms. She chaired Hazelwood's 125th Anniversary Celebration and co-chaired the Capital and Building Improvement effort that raised over $1.2 million. Following her husband's death in 2004, Joyce organized the addition of a memorial garden to help beautify the church grounds. She was actively involved in the Harvest Soup Kitchen and volunteered at Minnetrista Cultural Center. She was involved in Hands Across America in 1986 and volunteered at Habitat for Humanity.

Joyce loved to entertain. She was an outstanding cook who collected back issues of Gourmet magazine. She was known for her cinnamon pecan rolls and her crushed peppermint and chocolate ice cream pie. She was often complimented on her well-coiffed silver hair. She and her husband enjoyed playing bridge, cross-country skiing, tennis, long walks with their dogs and ballroom dancing. They lived in Germany for a year and traveled extensively throughout Europe. She loved making up and playing games such as "Bad Cop/Good Cop" and "Tickle Toes" with her grandchildren. Joyce possessed grammatical prowess and was often exasperated by her children's errors.

She is survived by her daughter Margaret M. Acheson of Cincinnati, OH (grandson Edwin R. Acheson III and great-grandchildren Aidan Acheson and Samara Keegan); her son, Dr. William D. Middleton of St. Louis (daughter-in-law Dr. Mary A. Middleton; grandson Benjamin "B.I." Middleton and his wife Katharine Middleton; granddaughter Dr. Dana Middleton Kerr, her husband Dr. David L. Kerr IV and great-grandson David L. Kerr V); and her daughter Elizabeth A. Middleton of Indianapolis. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her four sisters. The family thanks the devoted staff at Garden Villas. They are especially grateful to her beloved private healthcare aides Audrey Robinson and Yonaiadria Worthem. A service celebrating her life will be announced at a later date. Memorials may be designated to the Middleton Scholarship Fund #4362 and sent to the Ball State University Foundation, 2800 W. Bethel Ave., Muncie, IN. 47304.
