Rosie M. Schmitt, 98, died Friday, March 14, 2008, at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin.

She was born April 7, 1909, in Plantersville, Texas, to Joseph and Frances Metz Mertian. When she was young, the family moved near Des Moines, N.M., where she attended school and helped her family farm until moving to Lakin in 1985.

Mrs. Schmitt was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She enjoyed doing needlework, sewing, and fashioning china and porcelain dolls, making their bodies and their complete clothing. Her much loved pastime was her paintings, many of which she sold.

On Sept. 7, 1927, she married Homer Lee Schmitt in Plains. He died June 8, 1995, in Lakin. She also was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Jacob and Peter; and six sisters, Mary, Elizabeth, Katherine, Evangeline, Josephine and Edna.

Survivors include two sons, Carl Lee Schmitt of Phoenix, and Donald W. Schmitt of Waxahachie, Texas; a daughter, Norma J. Martin of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Carolyn Costello of Reno, Nev.; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Vigil service was at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Lakin. Funeral was at the church, with the Rev. Mike Helms officiating. Burial was in Lakin Cemetery.
