Solomon W. "Sol" Atkerson, eldest known child of Jefferson Davis Atkerson and Leona Alice Abbott, b. Aug. 18, 1877 in Stevenson, near Huntsville, Jackson County, AL. He d. Aug. 2, 1946 at the Veterans Admin. hospital in Muskogee, OK.
On Dec. 30, 1899 at Fort Smith, AR, Solomon m. 1) Nora Belle Hastings, eldest known child of Robert James Yell Hastings and Melissa Catherine Southerland, b. Jan. 24, 1882 in Benton County, AR. She d. Feb. 5, 1937 at Fort Smith, AR while in the hospital receiving treatment for an undisclosed cancer. Solomon m. 2) after June 1940, Rosa "Rosie" Jane Hays, who survived Solomon.
Solomon preceded his father Jefferson and step-mother to present-day Oklahoma settling southwest of Sallisaw on the back southwest side of Black Horse Mountain known as Sadie. After his father relocated from near Huntsville, AL, father Jefferson built a country store at Sadie with Sol eventually operating the store as the general merchant. In 1913 Sol purchased from two minor Cherokee Indian allottees his homeplace on the east side of the road opposite from the store [re: abstract held by the family that in 1999 occupied the former Solomon Atkerson homeplace]. In 1999 the old foundation of the former store could still be seen in a thicket of trees.
According to his abbreviated obit published in the Aug. 8, 1946 issue of Stilwell Democrat Journal and provided by the Adair County Historical & Genealogical Association:
Solomon W. Atkerson, age 69, father of Stillwell, OK banker Jeff Atkerson, died in the Veterans Administration hospital in Muskogee, OK following an extended illness. Funeral rites were held in Sadie, OK. He was born in Stevenson, Alabama. He arrived in then Cherokee Indian Territory (present-day Sequoyah County, OK) at 19 years of age and resided there for 50 years. He was a Spanish American War veteran. He was survived by his second wife Rose of the home, sons Jeff of Stilwell and Watie B. of Sallisaw.
