George Roswell Derbyshire proved himself anxious to fight for the Union. Enlisting on September 18, 1861, this 17-year-old farm hand from Tioga County, PA, enrolled as a private in Co. G, 45th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment (VIR). A year later, Derbyshire was wounded at the Battle of South Mountain, MD, causing him to receive a medical discharge in February 1863. He re-enlisted, however, on July 2, 1863, joining Co. F, 35th Pennsylvania VIR. That enlistment proved brief, as he was discharged on August 7, 1863, perhaps owing to lingering effects from his wound. Not to be deterred, Derbyshire re-joined his original unit in February 1864. Three months later during the fighting around Fredericksburg, he was wounded again. He had returned to duty by September 30 when he was captured at Pegram's Farm near Petersburg. Imprisoned in the Salisbury Confederate Military Prison, Derbyshire died there on February 11, 1865.
