He was the son of Norman Sylvester Melius (1850-1935) and Mary Donahoe (1850-1918) and went by the nickname "Jim" for the boxer James J. Corbet. He served with the rank of sergeant in the US Army overseas in World War I in the 307 Motor Transport Corps. He lived in Copake Falls, New York; New York City; and Mount Washington, Massachusetts, employed variously as a chauffeur, laborer, and farmer.
