Edinburg, TX - Heimel, David Earl (79). David passed away unexpectedly on February 17, 2023. He was born on September 16, 1943 in Coudersport, PA to Roy Frederick and Betty Lois (Holben) Heimel. David graduated from Grove City College with a degree in music and later earned a master's degree from Elmira College. David taught in New Jersey for one year after college, but spent the remainder of his teaching career in Elmira, NY teaching choral music and music theory in Junior High and High School. He also started and maintained a unique synthesizer ensemble, arranging classical music for performance by a group of students on synthesizers. David was also the chairman for the vocal music department for the school district for much of his time as a teacher. He spent the final several years of his teaching career as the Support Teacher at Elmira Free Academy. In addition to his career in education, David also served as organist and choir director, sometimes simultaneously, at a few area churches and at times sang in the church choir with his wife, Mary. David always had an interest in RVing, and for years also worked weekends and summers in RV sales and service.

David met his soul mate, Mary, in early 1970 and they were promptly married on June 24, 1970. Mary passed away on June 23, 2020 with David by her side, just one day shy of their 50th anniversary. David worked hard to allow Mary to stay home with their children and was a dedicated husband and father. In the 1980s David's family was one of the winners of the Great American Family Competition. David also dedicated a lot of his time to Boy Scouts, volunteering time at summer camp and becoming an Assistant Scoutmaster with the local Boy Scout Troop 101, where both of his sons earned the rank of Eagle Scout. David and Mary also spent time with their church youth group in the summers going on work camps to help underprivileged people. His caring nature went beyond family and friends, as he often helped students in need outside of school hours.

Upon retirement, David and Mary decided to sell their house and travel the country in their RV before eventually buying a house in Edinburg, TX. They called the Rio Grand Valley home for the past 20 years and were proud to have integrated into the local community, including their beloved church, First United Methodist Church of McAllen, TX. For years, David sang in the church choir with his wife Mary, and in the past decade had renewed his interest in the organ, practicing regularly and occasionally playing at church on Sunday morning. Mary had taught David how to crochet to help with the church's prayer shawl ministry, and David continued to remain active in this ministry up until his passing. He was also involved in building wheelchair ramps for people in the local community for years before his wife became ill.

David is preceded in death by his father Roy Heimel, mother Betty Heimel, wife Mary Heimel and brother Roy Heimel II.

David is survived by son John Heimel (wife Silvia; children David and Alejandro) of Flower Mound, TX; son Thomas (wife Kathryn; children Joseph, Joshua, Aaron and Rachel) Heimel of Spring City, TN; daughter Anne Heimel of Pfafftown, NC; 5 nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given to the American Cancer Society.
