Albert (Al) passed peacefully surrounded by family April 17, 2023. He was 82.

He was born June 14, 1940 in Mount Holly, NJ to Marie and Albert Atkinson. In his youth he enjoyed spending time at the Jersey Shore while he worked for the summer. He often returned to the shore and loved sitting on the boardwalk and watching the ocean with his wife Eileen.

Al was dedicated to his education and graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a Masters Degree. Al served in the military during the Vietnam war on Okinawa from 1962-1965 before working in Title Insurance for 10 years. He moved on to work for NJ Bell, now known as Verizon, and retired after 22 years.

Al treasured time with his family and also enjoyed golfing, stamp collecting, and birdwatching. He and Eileen moved to Denville in 1976 where he was very active in the community serving as Denville Council President for 3 years and council member for 7 years. He was a member of the Denville Environmental Commission, Denville Chamber of Commerce, American Legion, the Denville Republican Club, Denville Historical Society, and leader of his son Tom's Boy Scout troop. He also served as President of P.R.I.D.E. council, Saint Mary's Home and School Association, Lake Arrowhead Association, and the Denville Free Public Library, as well as, sitting on the Library Board of Trustees for many years. He was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Knights of Columbus council 3359 Denville NJ for 50 years where he became a Grand Knight, was a Faithful Navigator, and was in the Fourth degree honor guard. The Mayor of Denville acknowledged all of Al's service to the community by declaring May 21, 2004 Albert S. Atkinson Day. In 2010 the Rotary acknowledged his accomplishments with the Rotary Outstanding Citizen Award.

In 2017 Al and Eileen made the move to Leisuretown, Southampton, NJ. Al was very
passionate about his faith in Christianity and service to the Lord so they found a church and joined their new parish family. He never missed a mass even watching remotely when he wasn't able to attend in person. He continued his service to the community by volunteering at the church food pantry.

Al's memory will be carried on by many, including Eileen, his loving wife of 59 years; his son Tom, daughter-in-law Deana, 6 grandchildren (Chris, Joseph, Jason, Zack, Autumn, Bobby), 7 great-grandchildren (Connor, Emilee, Lily, Charlotte, Joseph, Brayden, Maye), and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Albert and Marie, his sister, Ann and his daughter, Mary.

Al's life will be celebrated Wednesday April 26, 2023, with a visitation from 9am-11am at Holy Eucharist Church, 520 Medford Lakes Rd. Tabernacle, NJ 08088. Mass to follow at 11am. Al will be laid to rest at 1:30pm at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Memorial Cemetery, 350 Province Line Rd., Wrightstown, NJ 08562. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to your favorite charity.
