John was the son of Vincent & Delphia Sain Walker. He served as a 2nd Lieutenant in G Company of the 66th NC Infantry after being previously enlisted from Sep 1862 - Sep 1863 as a prison guard at the infamous Confederate Military Prison in Salisbury, NC.

He was sick from around May 1864 thru that summer and at a CSA Gen Hosp #4 in Richmond for a time. He was furloughed home to Mocksville, NC due to his chronic diarrhea/fever in late July 1864 and never returned, dying there on Nov 20, 1864 just a week after his 25th birthday.
