Born Jan Leenderts Dijkstra in Friesland, Holland. Son of Leendert Meintes Dykstra and Grietje Theunis Norbruis Dykstra. Husband of Maggie Pluim, they had three daughters and one son. His WWI Draft Registration Card describes him as being tall and slender with blue eyes and black hair. He was a well-known representative for the Singer Sewing Machine Company for many years in the Sioux County region. The last two years of his life were spent at the Cherokee State Hospital, where he died. Services were held in Orange City on October 8 with Rev. Colenbrander officiating. News of his death was reported in the Ireton Ledger, page 3, on October 16, 1930 and in the Alton Democrat, page 1, on October 17, 1930.
