Pat's given name was Palestine Douglas Lewis but he did not like his given name so he went by "Pat" most of his life. He was the 5th child born to John Henry and Margaret Prather Lewis. He was too young to serve in World War 1 but as a young man he went off to work in the wheat fields of South Dakota. He also sold snacks and sandwiches for the Rock Island Railroad. He started farming near Topsy after his marriage to Nettie "Babe" Cox in 1922 and continued until Oct. 1936. He
moved the family to Indianola, IA in 1936 where he opened a Gas Station and grocery store. During World War 2, he worked as a boiler makers helper in the Shipyards of Wilmington, CA. He moved back to Indianola in the fall of 1945 when the war ended and went back into the Service Station Business. In 1960 he moved back to California and managed an Apartment Complex for his son, Herb. He retired in 1972 and moved to Cookeville, TN where his daughter lived.
