"Jonathan Hampton and Jacob Hider (Hyder) were captured by Maj. Ferguson's men at the Hampton home near Rutherfordton (Gilbert Town) in 1780 just prior to the battle of King's Mountain. Both were tried by Maj. Dunlap of the British Army and were sentenced to be hung. Before the execution they were parolled by Maj. Ferguson. Hider contemptuously tore his papers to pieces before leaving the presence of the court. Hampton preserved his, and they were treasured by this family for many generations." They stated the papers of their father Jonathan were lost after his death (the stories conflicted as to how) and they were recollecting from memory.
