"Jonathan Hampton and Jacob Hider (Hyder) were captured by Maj. Ferguson's men at the Hampton home near Rutherfordton (Gilbert Town) in 1780 just prior to the battle of King's Mountain. Both were tried by Maj. Dunlap of the British Army and were sentenced to be hung. Before the execution they were parolled by Maj. Ferguson. Hider contemptuously tore his papers to pieces before leaving the presence of the court. Hampton preserved his, and they were treasured by this family for many generations." (Copied from Draper's History of King's Mountain - pg 57-58)

Spouse: Nancy Walker Hampton (1759-1838)

JONATHAN HAMPTON *
1751 - 1843

In the Rev War pension application of Aaron Deveny, S8321, p. 41, Jonathan Hampton, Sr. appeared and stated he was age 88 years, making his birth year 1754. Sworn to before Judge J. H. Alley, Jonathan's son-in-law.

Jonathan's three grandsons were in their 80s when they answered Lyman Draper's questionnaires, and made several incorrect statements as well as contradicting each other. They stated the papers of their father Jonathan were lost after his death (the stories conflicted as to how) and they were recollecting from memory.
