Stephen James Gamble, son of William James Gamble, 1811-1873 and Martha Amelis McDow, 1812-1885 was born in Lancaster, County, South Carolina. He served in the Civil War from Lancaster Co., South Carolina. Shortly after the war he came to Sumter County, Florida. He married Mary Elizabeth Scott.
Stephen and Elizabeth homesteaded land 2 miles north of Wildwood, Florida, where they built their log house. They had a grove of large citrus trees, when the 1894-1895 freeze killed all of them. He then began to farm the land raising cotton, corn, and etc. Before the railroad was built into Wildwood, they had to move all and secure their supplies from Silver Springs, later from Leesburg by boat.
