John was born February 6, 1942 in Texarkana, Texas to Johnnie Edward and Beatrice Iola George Collvins. He was a retired ironworker. John was a member of First Baptist Church in New Boston and the American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mary Nell Pumphrey; and one son, Joel Goodman.

He is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Laurie and Doug Stone of Portales, New Mexico, Claire and Mark Yoder of Kansas City, Missouri, Tammy and Mike Reed of Austin, Texas, and Gabrielle McIntire of Texarkana, Texas; two sons, John Goodman of Waco, Texas and Russell Waldie of Texarkana, Texas; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Jerry Marlene Potts of Dallas, Texas, Pamela and Bob Weaver of New Boston, Texas, and Sherry Kay and Carl Sumpter of Eolia, Kentucky; one brother, Gerald Wayne Collvins of Abilene, Texas; ten grandchildren, Cyndal Jones, Chancellor Goodman, Lauren Stone, Derek Stone, Jessica Waldie, Tiffanie Waldie, Suzanne Jones, Joshua Livingston, Jaidyn River Yoder, and Skyler Carnefix; seven great grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.
