Jeffrey McLeod "Jeff" Adam, 22, died June 26 after the onset of a sudden illness that was later diagnosed as meningitis. He was a grandson of Sinclair Agnew Adam, Sr. and his wife, Margaret Louise (Everett) Adam of West Chester, PA.

Jeff was well known in sports circles for his achievements as a high-jumper, winning numerous events locally and at the state level. In addition, Adam was an avid sailor and traveled the world with the sailing community in Dana Point, CA.

Services were held Tuesday, July 5, at the Dana Point Yacht Club with memorial service will include speakers from Dana Hills High School, the Dana Point sailing community, friends and his sister, Brittany.

Wednesday night at the O.C. Sailing youth docks, there was a scheduled event for Adam, whose boat was also anchored in the basin. Afterward, family and friends gathered for a barbecue and bonfire memorial.

Friends on Facebook posted messages of condolence, prayers and thoughts on Adam's page and that of his sister. Community members in Laguna Niguel, J Serra Catholic High School (where Adam's mother works) and neighborhood friends have been providing meals, gifts cards and spiritual support.

Following the memorial service July 5, the family flew to the Philadelphia area, where Adam was laid to rest in the family plot in West Chester, PA.

From 2012: The Jeffrey Adam Memorial Regatta, named for a 22-year-old Laguna Niguel resident who died last year, sailed Sunday from the Dana Point Yacht Club at the harbor.

The regatta was organized by Liz Fletcher, 17, of Laguna Beach to honor her friend and fellow sailor Jeff Adam, who died in June because of a blood infection. Adam and Fletcher learned to sail in Dana Point through the Mariners Sea Scouts program, Westwind Sailing and the Dana Point Yacht Club and competed in many sailing events in the area.

The regatta will help Fletcher complete her community-service requirement to become a Quartermaster, the highest rank in the Sea Scouts.

From 2013. The Jeffrey Adam Memorial Regatta will be held Sunday, March 10 during the 42nd Anniversary Festival of Whales in Dana Point Harbor. The regatta is being planned by local sailor Liz Fletcher to honor her friend Jeff, who died unexpectedly in June 2011 shortly after being diagnosed with meningitis. The Dana Point Youth Charitable Foundation established by the Adam family and Dana Point Yacht Club are co-hosting the event.

Both Jeff and Liz learned to sail in Dana Point through the Mariners Sea Scouts program, Westwind Sailing and the Dana Point Yacht Club and both competed in many sailing events in the area. Fletcher staged the inaugural regatta last year as her community service project to achieve the rank of Quartermaster in her Mariners Sea Scout program. Her goal was to share Jeff's passion for sailing and teaching others to sail.

The regatta will be open to youth and adults who wish to race either competitively or just for fun. Sabots, Lasers and 420s will be some of the classes of boats on the water. Spectators are invited to watch from the shore or from free spectator boats. Proceeds from the regatta will benefit the Dana Point Youth Charitable Foundation, which supports youth sailing in Dana Point Harbor.

The regatta will be followed by an evening awards ceremony and buffet dinner at Dana Point Yacht Club. Regatta entrance fees are $30 which includes a commemorative bracelet, lunch, and a buffet dinner. Racing begins at 11 a.m. and dinner will be served at 4:30 p.m. Dinner is open to the public and tickets can be purchased for $20. Raffle prizes and presentation of the Jeffrey Adam Perpetual Sailing Award are part of the planned festivities.
