Margaret Armstrong was born in Ireland in 1828 to James Armstrong and Isabella Buchanan. They came to America and settled in Baltimore Maryland. In 1848 she married Summerfield Asbury Sheppard a prominent attorney. In 1849 S A Sheppard left for the Gold fields of California via the Cape Horn, Margaret followed in 1851 via the Panama route. When the gold fields did not pan out S A joined a law firm in San Francisco. In 1859 He moved to Tulare County and was elected District Attorney and later Judge.
In 1876 they moved to Ventura County where SA was prominent in the law retiring to the city of Nordoff where Margaret died 10 August 1899. S A Sheppard died at the home of his daughter in Los Angeles in 1909 and is buried at Angelus Rosedale Cemetery in Los Angeles. There is a lovely tombstone there with both SA and Margaret engraved on it.

BUT Margaret is not buried there!! Angelus Rosedale has no burial records for her. She is buried in Nordhoff Cemetery and there is no marker for either she or her son Summerfield Dean Sheppard who is buried next to her.
In the photo here Margaret is just to the left of the white marker. Very strange this burial situation, as by all accounts S A Sheppard and Margaret were devoted to each other. Wonder why the family did not bury them together?
