Frederick Ralph (Ted) Cyphert, 77, died November 20, 2005. He was born in Brookville, PA on January 4, 1928 to Ralph L. Cyphert and Bessanna Nail Cyphert, Maternal grandparents were George C. and Elizabeth T. Nail, Paternal grandparents were Robert H. and Lucy C. Cyphert. All were residents of Clarion, PA.

Ted attended local public schools, graduating with honors and earning varsity letters in basketball. He entered the Army Air Corps, served as a cryptographic technician in the continental U.S., and was honorably discharged in January 1946. He graduated from Clarion State Teacher's College in 1949 with a BS in Education. This institution awarded him a Distinguished Alumnus award in 1968. Syracuse University's Maxwell School awarded a Master of Social Science Degree to Ted in 1950. Later; he earned a Doctorate in Education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1957.

Dr. Cyphert's first teaching and administrative position was in Penn Junior High School in suburban Pittsburgh. In 1956 he accepted an Assistant Professorship at Ball State University. One year later he moved to Torrance (California) Unified School District as a Curriculum Consultant in the system office where he worked for two years. Cyphert's next position was with the College of Education of The Ohio State University where he served as Professor and Associate Dean. In 1968 he became Dean of the School of Education at the University of Virginia. In 1974 he returned to Ohio State as Dean of the College of Education and in 1979 he left administration to become Professor and Dean Emeritus at Ohio State. He spent a total of 22 years at Ohio State. He retired in 1987 and moved to Fort Myers, FL.

Dr. Cyphert authored over 90 books and publications and served as President of both the Association of Deans of Education in State Universities and Land Grant Colleges and The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education. In 1996 he received an Outstanding Volunteer Award from The Ohio State University. In 1999 he was elected to Ohio State's College of Education Hall of Fame. He was also active in the university accreditation movement. He is included in Who's Who in America.

Dr. Cyphert is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Lois Grosz Cyphert, a son, Dr. Stacey T. Cyphert (Rosemary) of Iowa City, IA and a daughter, Holly (Jon) Thornsbury of League City, TX. Two grandchildren, Caleb Thornsbury and Rebekah Meili Thornsbury also survive him.

In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to The Ted and Lois Cyphert Distinguished Professorship in Teacher Education at The Ohio State University, 1945 North High Street, Columbus, OH 43210. A memorial service will be held in Edison Hall at Cypress Cove Retirement Community on Saturday, November 26, 2005 at 1 PM. Funeral arrangements by Harvey-Engelhardt-Metz Funeral Home, Fort Myers.
