Jean Armstrong was the daughter of Matthew Armstrong and Mary Beatty of Augusta County, Virginia. She was born abt. 1737 [give or take a year or two]. She is mentioned in her father Matthew Armstrong's will in Lincoln County, North Carolina written on 6 May 1779.

Jean Armstrong married James Leeper, Jr. (1730-1765) of Augusta County, Virginia abt. 1754, likely in Augusta County, Virginia where they were then living. They had five children together: Elizabeth Leeper (married Robert Patrick), Margaret Leeper (married Alexander Porter), Matthew Leeper, Mary Leeper (married John Robinson) and James Leeper III.

Sometime after 1760 but before 1765, James Leeper and his family had relocated to North Carolina.
James Leeper died 18 July 1765 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. His estate records list Jean Leeper conducting his Vendue [Estate Sale] on 14 November 1766, and the buyers included Robert Patrick, Jean Leeper [several times], William Armstrong [several times], Nicholas Leeper, Robert Slone, Matthew Armstrong, Thomas Neel, John Giles, Samuel Bigam, John M. Michal, John Lowe and Benjamin Handonser? His Estate was valued at £113.6.2; less credits/expenses of £5.4, his widow Jean received "thirds Deducted" of £36.4.2, with the "Remainder Due to 5 Orphans" of £62.89.0., Each Orphan received £12.0.1½. James Leeper's Estate Sale was dated April 1769 and his Estate was settled in January 1775.
