James Ellsworth was born 8 November 1920 in Lewisville, Idaho, the sixth child born to Preston and Edna Walker Ellsworth.

Preston and his sons bought the Benedict Ranch from Carlson and Swauger in April 1950.

29 August 1950, James married Mabelle Frances Mulkey McRea. Mabelle brought with her, her young daughter, Sheila McRea, who James later adopted. At the time, James was managing the ranch in Lemhi County for his family. In the late sixties, James and Mabelle bought out the other partners.

James was always very community minded and served 12 years on the Leadore School board, twelve years in the Idaho State Senate, eight years as Senate Pro-Tem, and one term as county commissioner.

They raised a family of six children, Sheila born 19 Sept 1948, Lisa Leslie born 9 June 1951, Rita Kay born 14 Oct 1956, Carl Rand born 11 Aug 1960, and Gay Marie "Gigi" born 31 Aug 1965. In time, Sheila married Kenneth Lockes, Lisa Leslie married Rick Young, Rita Kay married David Koeppen, Carl Rand married Kelly Walker, and "Gigi" married Gay Arambarri.

James and Mabelle were successful ranchers in Lemhi County with a fine herd of Angus cattle.

James passed away Monday, 27 February 1989 in Leadore, Idaho. Funeral services were held Thursday, 2 March 1989 in the Leadore High School. Burial was in the Salmon Cemetery.
