Thomas W. Kirkland enlisted as a private on July 1, 1863, Company B, 20th Tennessee Cavalry in the Confederate States Army. He was slightly wounded June 10, 1864 at Tishomingo Creek, Mississippi. He was on the roll of prisoners surrendered at Citronelle, Moblie, Alabama on May 4, 1865 and was paroled on May 12, 1865 at Gainesville, Sumter, Alabama.
