James M. Bateman, Sr. (Mayo) passed away Monday, December 01, 1997, in Dallas. He was born April 20, 1920, in Maypearl to Clara and Fred Bateman.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Wanda Bateman; children, Candy Bateman Coleman of Plano, Jimmy Bateman of Mesquite, Cathy and Rick Coleman of Wylie, Peggy and Michael Duckworth of Allen, and Penny Bateman of Plano; 15 grandchildren; six great - grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sisters, Freda Camp of Palmer, Donna Bennett of Abilene, and a brother, Boyd Bateman of Palmer.

Mayo received a football scholarship from TCU, his college career unfortunately cut short by the onset of the war. He was a Decorated / Disabled Veteran of WW II, survivor of the Coral Sea Battle, serving in the Pacific Campaign under General Douglas MacArthur until his honorable discharge in 1945.

Retired from the City of Richardson since 1982, Mayo was a avid camera and aviation aficionado. He was a great humanitarian devoted to his loving animals during his many active years. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 P. M. Wednesday, Dec. 03 at the funeral home. The funeral service will be Thursday, Dec. 04 at 10 A. M. at the Ted Dickey Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at 2 P.M. Thursday. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be mad to the SPCA.
