Harry D. Bingman Jr.

Dave Bingman Jr. of Parkersburg passed away at home on June 20, 2007.

He was the eldest son of Harry David Bingman Sr. and Dollie Vandall Bingman. The family later moved to Tanner, where Dave attended elementary and high school and then Glenville State College. His upper level education was interrupted by World War II.

From 1942-1946, Dave served in the Army 3rd Military Regiment as a Sergeant and special investigator for the military government in England, France, Germany, Belgium and Central Europe. He earned three battle stars and several other service recognitions.

Upon his return to the states, Dave was able to continue his life of learning and teaching. He earned his BS degree from Marietta College and his master's degree from West Virginia University. During this time, he was selected as a member for a specialized science institute program at Rice University in Texas.

Dave's science teaching career spanned 38 years. He taught 31/2 years in Wirt County then spent the remainder of his career at Parkersburg High School and what is now WVU-P. During the 13 years at PHS, Dave taught physical, biological and geological sciences, served as department chairperson and initiated the planetarium astronomy program and the lectures. After leaving PHS, Dave went on to teach at PCC/WVU-P. Dave's service award from WVU-P included his science teaching assistantship at WVU main campus and his teaching/administrative duties at WVU-P: five years as an instructor, three years as an assistant professor, six years as an associate professor and eight years as a full professor. Dave served as chairperson of the Science-Mathematics Division for six years. He retired Professor Emeritus on June 30, 1987. He did some part-time instruction at Marietta College and WVU-P after official retirement. Even with all of his career accolades, his biggest pleasure was his association with all of his students and sharing his love of the sciences. Dave was also an avid reader, loved golf, fishing, traveling, boating, gardening and winters spent in Florida. His influence and love will be greatly missed.

Dave is survived by his loving wife, Eleanor Frances Smith Bingman of Parkersburg, whom he married in 1941. He is also survived by two sons, Harry David Bingman III and his wife, Thresa, of Louisville, Ky., and Stephen Michael Bingman and his wife, Ellen, of Vincent, Ohio, and their daughters, Darrah, Julia and Kerry. Dave is survived by his sister, Jane Leone of Hollywood, Fla., and her son, Nicholas and his wife, Cynthia, of Charlotte, N.C.; and the families of his brothers and sister who preceded him in death, George M. Bingman's wife, Mary Campbell and family, Vandall Dawes Bingman's wife, Ramona, and family, and Faith Bingman Reece and family.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. Nick Leone officiating. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery with graveside military rites by American Legion Post 15 and Masonic rites by Burning Springs Masonic Lodge.

Memorial contributions may be made to Augusta Scholarship Fund, c/o The WVU Foundation, P.O. Box 1650, Morgantown, WV 26507-1650.
