Benton, 26, a Sangamon County jailer, had been fishing with 7 other people about 1:30 AM when he fell from an 18 1/2 ft ski boat into Lake Springfield.
Benton worked for the Sangamon County Jail as a corrections officer since 1989. He was on the police eligibility lists in Quincy, Springfield, and Decatur.
He had previously worked for WGEM's operations department in Quincy before moving to Springfield in 1989.
Several of Benton's friends heard a splash and dove into the water because they knew Benton could not swim.
