Death of J.R.Stockard-The sad news of the death of Mr.J.R.Stockard, reached his parents and other relatives and friends in Forrest City Sunday morning. He died Sunday, June 7.1903, at Memphis of meningitus, after an illness of only two days, his father, brother and wife being with him in his short illness. The remains were brought here and interred in Mt.Vernon cemetery Sunday, Rev.W.H.Dyer officiating. Rush Stockard, as he was familiarly called, was born near Forrest City, and was 32 years of age, being the younger son of Mr.J.F.Stockard, formerly of Goodwin township. He was a young man of many noble traits, a true friend, a kind husband, and a delightful neighbor. He leaves a wife and relatives here, to whom the Times extends sincere sympathy and condolence in their sudden and unexpected bereavement. June 12,1903 Forrest City Times Newspaper

The Stockard graves have no headstones. The collection of plots is surrounded by a low (6 inches high or so) concrete wall, with a corner block at each corner with an "S" in the top of the block. On one of the walls, "J F Stockard" is lettered into the concrete. It is believed the plot contains 8 graves. The information is from 4 surviving pages of the Stockard family bible, which burned in 1948. Some of the entries are partial and some are hard to read, but this is the best information I have). In addition to the 3 graves already listed (Nancy, Mary Jane, and JR), I believe the others are James Ferdinand (JF) Stockard (b. 4-10-1838, d. 4-15-1915 (hard to read, but I believe this is the correct year). Richard Lee (RL or Dick) Stockard (b. 9-14-1869, d. 8-4-1937) William Henry Stockard (b. 8-8-1870, d. 8-28-1870) Albert Yester Stockard (b. 3-12-1873, d. 10-16-1873) John Franklin Stockard (b. 9-7-1874, d. 9-6-1877) The only other child of JF and Nancy is Tomye Ella (b. 10-15-1882 (although the year may have been earlier, since the entry was made by Tomye herself, much after the fact), d. 12-about 20-1966). She is buried in Brinkley. Tomye was my grandmother. Other miscellaneous information: As I noted before, Nancy was known in the family as Ella. She was born ?-3-1843 (month is illegible), and she and JF were married 9-26-1866. JR's name was James Rush. He was married to Eula Roles on 12-7-1897.I am the only living descendant of JF and Nancy, and I have no children, so interest in this is probably pretty limited. Thanks again for the information and for your work in entering all this information. The information on Mary Jane was especially interesting to me, because I have a record of her birth, but no record of her death, and I did not know anything about the details.
Regards, Paul Weissman.
