Mrs. Mary Corato, 85, Pioneers' Daughter, Dies In Sonora Monday
Mrs. Mary Ratto Corato, 85, a daughter of an early pioneer family of Tuolumne County, died at a hospital in Sonora Monday morning following an illness of several months' duration.
Born August 24, 1869 at the ranch home in which she spent her lifetime, Mrs. Corato was one of several children born to the late G. B. and Louise Mosto Ratto, pioneer residents who came to California from Italy. After living for a short time in Sonora, the parents moved to Shaws Flat where the family has since lived. The ranch home and property has been the locale over a period of years for many motion pictures.
Mrs. Corato attended the Shaws Flat Grammar School and then continued living quietly at the ranch as a housewife. Her companion for 30 years was her sister-in-law, Mrs. Kate Ratto, of Sonora.
Funeral services were held from the Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home yesterday afternoon with Rev. Leonard R. Dixon of St. James' Episcopal Church officiating. Interment was in the family plot in the Sonora City Cemetery.
Mrs. Corato leaves a brother, Joseph Ratto, Shaws Flat, a niece, Mrs. Lylas Taylor; a grandniece, Miss Janis Taylor; and her sister-in-law, all residents of Sonora; and several cousins, residing in Tuolumne County.
