MIDDLETOWN - Walter J. Ellegood Sr., 84, of Middletown passed away Monday, March 3, 2008, at Martin Memorial Hospital South in Martin County, Fla., where he resides for the winter.
Mr. Ellegood was born Dec. 6, 1923, in Middletown to the late William and Lela Johnson-Ellegood.
He married Pauline Sue Sparks; she preceded him in death in January 1983.
He retired from Caterpillar Inc. in Peoria as a machine operator after 22 years of service. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He was a member of Middletown Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the Lincoln American Legion and VFW.
Surviving are his sons, Walter J. Ellegood Jr. (Pam) of Lincoln, Roy D. Ellegood of New Holland, Greg K. Ellegood of Middletown and Robert W. Ellegood (Clarice) of Tallula; daughters, Sharon E. Merriman (David) of Port Salerno, Fla., and Cheryl A. Ellegood-Gaffigan of Springfield; brother, Louise Ellegood (Doris) of Middletown; sisters, Sweetie Bumgardner of Carlinville and Mary Ellegood of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Pauline; and his grandson, James Merriman.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Middletown Methodist Church.
Burial will be in Irish Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 10, 2008, at Holland Barry and Bennett Funeral Home in Lincoln.
