Payne Jones was a member of Capt. William Quantrill's Missouri Partisan Rangers. He surrendered along with Frank James at Samuel's Depot in Nelson County, Kentucky on July 26, 1865 and later paroled. After the war he and several other ex guerrillas including the James and Younger brothers started robbing banks. He was suspected of being involved in the robbery of the Hughes and Wesson bank in Richmond, MO. on May 22, 1867. He was killed from a shotgun blast by another ex guerrilla Jim "Crow" Chiles on a moonlit night when he approached the stable gate at the Chiles house. Chiles believed he was trying to steal a horse.
