Margaret Mackenzie Astin died in Los Angeles, California on January 3, 1991, at the age of 86.
Mrs. Astin moved from Washington D.C. to Los Angeles in 1985 following the death of her husband, Allen V. Astin, former director of the National Bureau of Standards.Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Mrs. Astin was the daughter of A.G. Mackenzie, former columnist and sportswriter for the Salt Lake Tribune. From 1922-1926, Mrs. Astin Attended the University of Utah, where she served as editor of the University literary journal, The Pen. After graduating from the U of U, Mrs. Astin moved to New Yrok where she studied journalism at Coluimbia University and worked as a reporter for the New York Post. In 1929, she married Salt Lake native and fellow University of Utah alumnus, Allen V. Astin. After spending a year at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, the couple moved to Washington, D.C., where her husband eventually became director of the National Bureau of Standards, a position he held from 1952-1968.
During the second World War, Mrs. Astin served as a substitute teacher for the Montgomery County, Maryland public schools. She is a former Arts Chairperson for the Maryland chapter of the American Association of University Women and the author of several one act plays.
Mrs. Astin is survived by her two children, actor-director, John Astin and UCLA Professor Alexander W. Astin; seven grandchildren: John, David, Paul, Allen, Thomas, Sean, and Mackenzie.
