Thomas Byerley died of wounds received as a Union Army soldier in the Civil War. He was wounded at Resaca, Georgia, and died in Knoxville. Thomas Byerley was married Aug. 25, 1859, in Knox County, Tennessee, to Martha J. Yearout. He and Martha are listed in the 1860 census in Grainger County, Tennessee. Census records suggest they had two daughters after 1860. He fought alongside three brothers and one stepbrother, and was the son of James E. Byerley. His grandfather, Jasper Phillip Byerley, and great-grandfather, Casper Phillip Byerley, were both Revolutionary War soldiers.
