"When Quantrell burned Lawrence, KS his army went across Grandpa Hanes (GW) cornfield. A posse of citizens had a battle with him in sight of their house. A few were killed. I have forgotten how many. My mother Margaret Ann lived with them then and she carried the bedding out of the house and hid it in the cornfield so that if Quantrell burned the house they would have the bedding."
Margaret Ann married in Olathe KS Mar 22, 1863 to William Copple. At the time of the raid they lived on a homestead near Prairie City Kansas in Douglas Co. very near the present Baldwin City.
