He was born on June 15, 1936, in Rockville Township, the son of Richard and Opal (Gordon) Benge. On November 23, 1953, he married Marjorie Burger at the Morris United Methodist Church. Gerald was very proactive in his community. He was a farmer in the Deselm area for his entire life. He was a trustee and president for 24 years for the Manteno Fire Protection District, as well as trustee and president for over 40 years at Bloom's Grove Cemetery. For 22.5 years, he was supervisor for Rockville Township. Gerald was also a dedicated member of Manteno United Methodist Church.
Gerald is survived by his dear wife of 69 years, Marjorie Benge; his daughters, Diana (Ken) Goodwin and Donna (John) Nelson; grandchildren, Jonathan (Jennifer) Nelson, Kimberly (Andy) Gerdes, and Kurt Goodwin (Tammy Reed); great-grandchildren, Alexis (Derrick) Hosselton, Kaylie Kent, Sydney Nelson, and Laney Nelson; and one great-great granddaughter, due in August 2023.
He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Dennis Benge; and his in-laws, Clarence and Marjorie Burger.
Visitation for Gerald will be held on Saturday, March 25, 2023, from 9:00AM until the service at 11:00AM, at Brown-Jensen Funeral Home in Manteno. Pastor Lana Robyne will officiate. Immediately following the service, burial will be held at Bloom's Grove Cemetery in Manteno. Pallbearers for Gerald are as follows: Jonathan Nelson, Jennifer Nelson, Kimberly Gerdes, Andy Gerdes, Kurt Goodwin, Tammy Reed, Alexis Hosselton, Derrick Hosselton, Kaylie Kent, Sydney Nelson, and Laney Nelson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Manteno Fire Protection District.
