Mrs. Mary Alice Merritt

Mrs. Mary Alice Merritt, aged 54 years, the widow of the late W. H. Merritt, died last night at 12 o'clock at her late r esidence 2220 Highland avenue after a three weeks' illness. Mrs. Merritt died with her eight surviving children at her bedside.

Funeral services will take place from the residence on Saturday morning at 10 o'clock and interment will follow in Oak Hill cemetery. The deceased is survived by four sons, Charles H., Harry, John and Frank Merritt; the daughters are Misses Nellie, Sallie and Bessie Merritt, and Mrs. W. S. Durham, all of Birmingham. A sister-in-law of the deceased, Mrs. W. F. Vandiver, resides in Montgomery. Mrs. Merritt was a daughter of the late Dr. Johnson Matthews of Marietta, Ga.

Mary Alice Merritt was the daughter of Dr. Johnson Matthews and his wife Sarah Margaret Tyson. Dr. Matthews was from Gwinnett County, Georgia, and his wife was from Pennsylvania. Sadly, Mary Alice's mother died when she was about six years old, and her father died when she was about eighteen. Of the five children they had, she was the only one who lived past 30 years old.

On 31 October 1878, Mary Alice married William Henry Merritt, son of Joel Henry Merritt and his wife Catherine R. Mddox.. The couple lived in Lowdnesboro in Lowdnes County, then in Clanton in Chilton County, and later in Birmingham. In all, William and Mary Alice had a dozen children, which included four who died young. The eight who lived until adulthood were Charles Henry Merritt, , Nellie Alice (Merritt) Hunter, Sallie Tyson (Merritt) Wise, Bessie (Merritt) Dougherty, Kate L. (Merritt) Durham, William Henry Merritt, Jr., John Clinton Merritt, and Frank Vandiver Merritt. William Henry Merritt, Sr. was President of the American Bolt Company.
