Son of Dave and Rebecca (Nee Boone) Barber. He had 11 siblings.
He married Mary Jane Bufford in Perry County on January 27, 1904 they had 5 children together Grace born 1904, Floyd 1905, Eddie 1907, Lucile 1910, and Lydia 1912. He was widowed by 1912 within 2 months of the birth of Lydia whom passed at 4 months old.

His wife Mary was the granddaughter of William Burford a former slave whom was given 40 acres of land in 1868 from his former owner Solomon R. Burford. This land became known as Burford's landing where several other former slaves would grow their families and obtain more land in the area. Mary's father Anderson donated one half an acre of his land to the trustees of the Free Will Baptist Church to be used for a church and cemetery site. That cemetery site is now known as Mack's Chapel where David's dear wife Mary Jane (Nee Bufford) Barber was laid to rest next to several of her children.
